Updated March 2026
Is ChatGPT Banned in Australia?
No. But AI services now face new restrictions. Here's the full picture.
What actually happened
Since March 9, 2026, AI chatbots capable of generating explicit content — pornography, extreme violence, self-harm material, or content promoting eating disorders — must verify that users are 18+ before allowing access to that type of content.
This doesn't mean ChatGPT is banned. It means AI platforms must implement age checks for restricted material. General-purpose AI use — asking questions, writing assistance, coding, research — is not affected.
What's changed in practice
- Some AI apps removed from Australian app stores. Apps that didn't implement age verification in time were pulled from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store for Australian users.
- Content filters are stricter. AI platforms operating in Australia have tightened their content filters to prevent generating restricted material for unverified users.
- Over 50% of AI services were non-compliant at the deadline, according to reporting. Some chose to block Australian users entirely rather than implement verification.
- General AI use is unaffected. If you're using ChatGPT for work, study, coding, or general questions, nothing has changed for you.
Which AI services are affected?
The law applies to any AI service capable of generating restricted content. This includes:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI) — must verify 18+ for requests involving restricted material
- Google Gemini — subject to same requirements
- Character.AI, Replika, and similar — AI companion apps that can generate intimate or explicit content
- Image generation AI — services capable of generating explicit imagery
AI services that cannot generate restricted content (like code assistants or business tools) are not covered.
If an AI app disappeared from your phone
If an AI app you were using has been removed from the Australian App Store or Play Store, it's likely because the developer hasn't implemented age verification yet. Your options:
- Check if the web version still works — some apps are removed from stores but the website version remains accessible.
- Wait for compliance — many developers are working on implementing verification and their apps will return.
- Use a VPN — connecting from a non-Australian server may allow you to access the app or redownload it from another country's app store.
