What actually happened

Since March 9, 2026, AI chatbots capable of generating explicit content — pornography, extreme violence, self-harm material, or content promoting eating disorders — must verify that users are 18+ before allowing access to that type of content.

This doesn't mean ChatGPT is banned. It means AI platforms must implement age checks for restricted material. General-purpose AI use — asking questions, writing assistance, coding, research — is not affected.
