Is Pornhub Banned in Australia?
Not exactly banned. But blocked. Here's the difference.
What happened
On March 9, 2026, Australia's Age-Restricted Material Codes came into effect. These laws require any platform hosting pornography to verify that users are 18+ before granting access.
Aylo — the company that owns Pornhub, RedTube, YouPorn, and Tube8 — chose not to comply. Instead of implementing age verification, Aylo blocked all Australian IP addresses from accessing their platforms.
If you visit Pornhub from an Australian internet connection, you'll see a block screen. No verification option is offered. Access is simply denied.
Why did Aylo block Australia?
Aylo has done this before. They used the same approach in Louisiana, Texas, and several other US states when those states passed age verification laws. Their stated position is that age verification systems:
- Create privacy risks for users
- Are ineffective (users bypass them easily)
- Put the burden on platforms rather than on device-level solutions
Whether you agree with Aylo's position or not, the result is the same: their sites are inaccessible from Australian IP addresses.
Is it illegal to access Pornhub from Australia?
No. There is no law making it illegal for Australian adults to access pornography. The law requires platforms to verify age — it does not criminalise users.
Accessing Pornhub via a VPN may technically breach Pornhub's terms of service, but that's a civil matter between you and the platform. It is not a criminal offence and is not regulated by Australian law.
What about other adult sites?
Not all adult sites blocked access. Here's how the major platforms responded:

What are Australian adults doing?
VPN downloads surged immediately. On March 9, 2026, three VPN apps appeared in the top 15 most downloaded free apps on the Australian App Store. NordVPN, Proton VPN, and VPN Super Unlimited Proxy all saw massive spikes.
